Meet agentic AI: a new manufacturing frontier

Liderazgo de pensamiento |
 enero 24, 2025

In the current fast-moving manufacturing landscape, CEOs require innovative solutions and are eagerly embracing AI to help them fill operational and knowledge gaps. Enter agentic AI – Gartner identifies agentic AI as a pivotal business trend for 2025 and predicts that 33 per cent of enterprise software applications will incorporate agentic AI by 2028.

As for its capabilities, its artificial intelligence systems are capable of autonomous decision-making and action within specific environments. Unlike traditional AI, which typically requires human oversight or intervention, agentic AI operates independently to analyse data, make decisions, and take actions in real-time, without constant human guidance.

In manufacturing, agentic AI can optimise processes by autonomously managing tasks such as predictive maintenance, supply chain logistics, quality control, and process adjustments. By leveraging vast amounts of data and advanced algorithms, it enhances efficiency, reduces errors, and improves productivity, all while learning and adapting over time.

The key feature of agentic AI is its ability to act as an “agent” that makes decisions and executes tasks on its own, enabling more agile and intelligent systems in industries like manufacturing, logistics, and other complex operations.

Navigating the challenges of agentic AI in manufacturing

Agentic AI can revolutionise manufacturing, but challenges remain, including the risk of repeating past mistakes seen with robotic process automation, such as creating systems without clear documentation, leading to inefficiencies. Additionally, reliance on organisational data highlights the risks of poor data quality: garbage in, garbage out. Despite these challenges, agentic AI holds immense potential to reshape manufacturing, driving agility and productivity while requiring careful management to ensure success.

INCIT’s soon-to-launch Artificial Intelligence Readiness Index (AIRI) can help. It is designed to assess and enhance AI readiness, make certain businesses remain competitive, allowing them to adapt in an era of intelligent automation. By empowering manufactures to get ready to integrate AI-driven technologies, AIRI can support businesses in bridging the gap between traditional practices and next-generation innovations.
